SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio 1.6 is coming up later this quarter so it is time to do a little previewing! You can find the full roadmap for Design Studio here. Below I’ll discuss the highlights of all the new features that we can expect.


New Scorecard component


Design Studio 1.6 brings a new component that we have seen before in Xcelsius (SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards): the Scorecard component, or formatted table. This component can display multiple visualizations on a single table row. A table can display multiple of these rows, for example for each product type or region a separate row. We can show simple numbers but also charts (micro charts/trend lines without x/y-axis). Exceptions as defined in the underlying BEx Query can be shown as trend icons, colored text or colored cell backgrounds.


Very very useful if you want to display a lot of performance indicators in a compact way. Should also be easy to develop as you now only need a single scorecard component to achieve this, instead of using multiple text, chart etc. components to to the same.


New Spreadsheet component


A bit of a surprise is this new Spreadsheet component. It has the same functionality as the Crosstab component, so it can display data and has a context menu with all the OLAP features (filter, sort etc.). Difference is that you can now copy and paste data to and from this component. This is meant for planning scenarios, where you have to enter values (the planning template also uses the spreadsheet component). Now you can copy the data from a Design Studio app to Excel, make some adjustments there, and copy and paste them back into the spreadsheet component in the Design Studio app and use the planning functionality to save the data. The component also really looks like a familiar spreadsheet environment as in MS Excel, so that is also a plus. There is no info on using formulas or such as we are used to in Excel.


Geo pie charts


You can now use custom point markers (images) in the Geo Map component. Also pie charts can be plotted on the geo layers. Don’t use this, as pie charts suck.


Info charts + Chart feeding component


Design Studio 1.6 introduces a totally new charting component called the Info chart. The old chart component is still there, but for new developments we should use the new component. It has new chart types (bullet, combo, stacked), a context menu and support for BEx Query exceptions. It also supports the trellis chart feature we know from SAP Lumira, where you get multiple versions of the same chart to show different parts of a dataset.


The Chart feeding component lets the user set up a chart (Info chart) themselves on runtime.


So it’s a bit weird that they introduce a new component instead of updating the existing one, but anyway, more consistency in looks and usability between different applications (Lumira/Design Studio) is always a good thing.

In later releases a real formula editor will be added. So this is a nice first start, but probably a bit too limited/simple to be really useful. The column names of these new columns can be edited by the way. Another new feature is that end users can create top/bottom N filters on measures.


Prototipos


In local mode it is possible to use a CSV-file to load data for prototyping. It is even an option to download SAP BW data and use that for your prototype. ¡Esto es genial! This was always an important feature of Xcelsius, where it was easy to enter some dummy data in the spreadsheet to quickly create a good looking dashboard prototype.


Integrated CSS editor


We can finally edit and upload/update the custom CSS file from within the Design Studio client tool, instead of having to use Notepad++ or another CSS editor and manually upload the file to the BI Platform after each edit. ¡Excelente!


Diverso


This one has been on my wish list for a long time: Drag & Drop between the Navigation Panel and the Crosstab or Spreadsheet component is finally available. This means that the functionality as we know it from BEx Web/Analysis can now be fully replicated with a Design Studio application.


Export functionality has been improved a bit: Export to PDF now supports multi-panels and Export to Excel/CSV includes hierarchies.


There are two more new components that we know from SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards: Timer and Tree component. The Timer component can trigger scripts at a set interval, for example the refresh of a data source. The Tree component can display hierarchical structures.


An icon library is now included.


Conclusión


This is a great update and I can’t wait to try it out! Good stuff. For the next version I expect more on the Geo Map component, commenting in combination with BI4.2 and the formula editor for adding new measures and manipulating data.

To whom it may concern, I am looking for some help with the following: I have BO Dashboard 4.1 SP 6 running in Win 10 x64 and Office 2013 Professional Plus. I work on the building management field and would like to build a dashboard with time series trends on all the equipment variables within a building. I can export the data into CSV files, but my challenge is how to set up this up the end to end workflow/process to get this into the dashboard visualization layer. I don’t have any SAP tools to create the universe (also need help how to use and set this up)….any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The cost flow diagram below can help answer this question. A material’s standard cost or moving average price is used for each material movement to an order. The cost component split contains the material, labor, and overhead portions based on the BOM, Routing, and Costing sheet. When a raw material is backflushed or issued to an order, it takes the material’s standard cost or moving average price. For semi-finished or finished goods, the cost of the material is made up on the backflushes/issues of component materials to the order (quantity issued times standard cost or MAP), routing activity confirmations (quantity times activity rate), and the costing sheet represents the overhead applied.

There are quite a few companies that share your thought but R/3 was designed as a OLTP system and not an analytical and reporting system. In fact depending on you needs you can even get away with a reporting instance (quite easy with Sun or EMC storage) Yes you can run as many reports as you need from R/3 and web enable them but consider these factors.


1: Performance -- heavy reporting along with regular OLTP transactions can produce a lot of load both on the R/3 and the database (cpu, memory, disks, etc). Just take a look at the load put on your system during a month end, quarter end, or year end -- now imagine that occurring even more frequently.


2: Data analysis -- BW uses a Data Ware house and OLAP concepts for storing and analyzing data. Where R/3 was designed for transaction processing. With a lot of work you can get the same analysis out of R/3 but most likely would be easier from a BW.

Major benefits of BW include: 1) By offloading ad-hoc and long running queries from production R/3 system to BW system, overall system performance should improve on R/3.


2) Another key performance benefit with BW is the database design. It is designed specifically for query processing, not data updating and OLTP. Within BW, the data structures are designed differently and are much better suited for reporting than R/3 data structures. For example, BW utilizes star schema design which includes fact and dimension tables with bit-mapped indexes. Other important factors include the built-in support for aggregates, database partitioning, more efficient ABAP code by utilizing TRFC processing versus IDOC.


3) Better front-end reporting within BW. Although the BW excel front-end has it's problems, it provides more flexibility and analysis capability than the R/3 reporting screens.


4) BW has ability to pull data from other SAP or non-SAP sources into a consolidated cube.


In summary, BW provides much better performance and stronger data analysis capabilities than R/3.

Queries are taking ages and users get more and more frustrated? Leveraging on operational intelligence, we provide insights into query performance analysis as well as methods for identifying and troubleshooting long running queries in the BW system.


SAP BW system can be analysed from various perspectives, but its central KPI is fast reporting capability. Therefore, regular analysis of the query performance should be a part of regular BW maintenance. For the purpose of acquiring operational intelligence we used Datavard tool HeatMap TM developed for real-time usage analysis.


Let’s focus on the most important indicator of query performance: query runtime:

Average query runtime on an average BW system varies quite significantly form query to query. Fig.1 shows us an example of HeatMap TM output of the longest running queries on the customer’s production system. As we can see, we have here plenty of very long running queries and their negative effect is multiplied by the number of executions.


The adverse consequences of ′bad queries′ are most visible when we look at their overall contribution to the total runtime users spend on reporting. Fig.2 shows us a comparison between the contribution of long running queries to the overall number of query executions and runtime. As we can see, although the long running queries are responsible for “only” 17% of executions, their impact on the overall runtime is 77%.

With the help of HeatMap TM drilldown functionality, we are able to analyze each query broken down into a set of filters (see footnote no.2). As you can see from fig. 3, we identified three sets of filters being used, where two of them have quite reasonable runtime (in sec.), however there is one long running query variant which is dragging down the average runtime. Looking at the used filters, we identified attribute 0MATERIAL as the one that should be included in the longest running variant to significantly improve its runtime. This way, the customers can focus their attention on the most problematic queries/variants directly and make the biggest benefit, instead of applying more general (indirect) and perhaps otherwise unnecessary measures of performance tuning, such as secondary indexes, cube compression etc.


From our experience, every query performance analysis should focus mainly on frequently executed queries, because they contribute the greatest deal to the overall performance as well as to the ′user experience′.

With the most recent SAP NetWeaver version released in September 2014 and in accordance with SAP's "commitment to openness and innovation," SAP has begun to provide an Oracle-specific implementation of SAP's Core Data Services (CDS). This will allow SAP applications and application developers to push application functionality down to the database, i. e. to call procedures stored in the Oracle Database.

Over the last twenty years, SAP and Oracle have worked together to provide customers with a supported SAP/Oracle environment, when running SAP applications on top of an Oracle database. Teradata launches analytics product as SAP BW replacement


Teradata has released an analytics product for SAP ERP. as a full-blown alternative to SAP BW.


The data warehouse supplier said the product will provide easier and cheaper analysis of SAP ERP data than does SAP BW (Business Information Warehouse).


The supplier cited, in a statement, an online retail customer which was having difficulty running the business because it was unable to get timely reports based on enterprise resource planning (ERP) data: "With the adoption of Teradata Analytics for SAP, managers at the retailer were able to quickly measure and predict the impact of changes, such as introducing free product delivery for a select group of consumers.”


Teradata business development director Kevin Long ( pictured ) said the new product’s capability came with the acquisition of New Frontiers in mid-2013, which brought with it existing SAP ERP customers. These include Dutch electronics retail company BCC, Dutch train maintenance company NedTrain, and frozen potato products producer Lamb Weston.


“We bought the intellectual property of its data extractors from the SAP modules,” he said. “We have been integrating SAP data with Teradata for seven years or so, and co-habiting with BW so that a lot of the intensive analytics work can be done in Teradata.


"We have a concept of infocubes, so that cubes can be held in Teradata or partially held there, and that has enabled SAP users to offload the challenges with BW. But some of our customers get frustrated by the complexity of it.

“This offers a way to do away with BW altogether. It extracts data from SAP ECC [ERP Central Component] from a comprehensive array of modules, and it comes with the ELT scripts, the data model, and 150 dashboards and standardised business reports. It offers a way of getting data directly from SAP without having to rely on the logic built into BW,” said Long.


Teradata’s targets for the software are SAP customers which struggle with BW and are hesitating over the investment required for the SAP in-memory database, Hana. said Long.


Teradata describes Hana as an “expensive and immature appliance”.


"We have seen very few, or indeed any, customers who have migrated BW to Hana. There are organisations which have adopted Hana for operational reporting. But the scale of data that BW instances typically have means that we’ve not seen Hana migration," said Long


“And we would say the Teradata intelligent memory offering is more cost effective. This is significant for us. It provides a viable alternative to BW,” he said.


Do I need BEx Analyzer and SAPGUI to access an SAP BW system and reports?


Sorry, but I am new to SAP, so the question may be simple. What software do I need on my Windows client workstation to access an SAP BW system and reports? Will IE 6 be sufficient, or do I need SAPGUI?


The answer depends on your role within the context of BW. There are two general ways that you can use to access the BW system. As an end user looking at reports, you can use an Internet browser like Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This approach requires a zero footprint for software.


The other option is to use the BEx Analyzer tool, which requires an SAPGUI installation, and associated patches.

7. When we click any metachain, it will show the different processes within the chain & also shows where a load/index creation job failed and also it gives the individual runtimes – can be used for loads performance tuning.


8. Also, from this screen, we can navigate to individual chains and check for issues directly.

SAP BW InfoProviders


InfoProviders are the key objects within SAP BW that you base your BEx reports on. InfoProviders include objects that physically store data (data targets), such as InfoCubes, operational data store objects (ODS objects), and InfoObjects (characteristics with attributes or texts).


Data targets are SAP BW objects that have their own data store (which physically contains data). These objects include InfoCubes, ODS objects and InfoObjects. Data Targets are populated with data from the source systems using a load process (or by writing directly into the tables for transactional object types).


The term InfoProvider encompasses objects that physically contain data:


Basic InfoCubes


Transactional InfoCubes


ODS Objects


InfoObjects (characteristics with attributes, texts or hierarchies).


Info Providers also include objects that do not contain any actual data, such as, InfoSets, RemoteCubes and MultiProviders.


InfoProviders can also be objects that do not physically store data, but which display logical views of data, such as:


InfoSets


RemoteCubes


SAP RemoteCubes


Virtual InfoCube with Services


MultiProviders


InfoCubes are data targets. They describe (from a reporting point of view) a self-contained business-orientated dataset. They can also be seen as InfoProviders if reports and analyses in BW are executed using them.


Only BasicCubes physically contain data in the database. Virtual InfoCubes simply display logical views of a dataset. The type of InfoCube is not important as far as reporting is concerned, as the user cannot distinguish between the two.


Transactional InfoCubes are used only in conjunction with SEM. The data from this kind of InfoCube can be accessed on a read/write basis, allowing users to perform transactions to update the data within the infocube as they wish. Standard InfoCubes differ in that they only allow the user to read-only access.


A RemoteCube is an InfoCube whose transaction data is managed externally outside SAP BW. Only the structure of the RemoteCube is defined in BW. The data is read for reporting using a BAPI from an external system. An SAP RemoteCube is a RemoteCube that allows the definition of queries with direct access to transaction data in other SAP systems (R/3 for example). The Master data and hierarchies associated with these SAP RemoteCubes are replicated between the other SAP system and BW enabling faster execution of the users queries


A virtual InfoCube with services is an InfoCube that does not have its own physical data storage in BW. A user-defined function module is used as the DataSource. This type of InfoProvider is used primarily in the SAP SEM application.


An Infoset is a specific kind of InfoProvider that does not contain data itself, but describes two or more data targets that are joined using rules. The data targets can be of type ODS Objects and/or InfoObjects (characteristics with master data). If one of the InfoObjects contained in the join is a time-dependent characteristic, the join itself becomes time-dependent or a temporal join.


You can include every ODS object and every InfoObject of the type Characteristic with Master Data in a join.


A join can contain either the same type of object or different types of objects.


You can include individual objects in a join, as many times as you want.


Objects in the join are linked using join conditions (equal join conditions).


A join condition determines the combination of individual object records included in the result set.


ODS (Operational Data Store) Objects


An ODS Object stores consolidated datasets and cleansed transactional data from one or more InfoSources on a document (atomic) level. You can analyse this dataset in a BEx query or an InfoSet query.


An ODS object contains key fields (for example, Employee number) and data fields that can also contain character fields (for example, Absence Type, Days Absence) as key figures. An ODS object can act as a Data Mart and be used as an Infosource to update InfoCubes and/or other ODS Objects in the same system or across different systems.


Data is stored in an ODS object in transparent tables (flat database tables) which differs from Infocubes that use a multi-dimensional model. Fact tables and dimension tables are not created.


As with Infocubes, ODS support cumulative updates of key figures, but with ODS objects it is also possible to overwrite data. This is particularly important with document-related structures, since changes made to documents in the source system do not apply solely to numeric fields such as Days Absence, but also to non-numeric fields such as Sickness Reason.


A MultiProvider is a type of InfoProvider that combines data from a number of InfoProviders and makes them available as a whole to reporting. The MultiProvider does not itself contain any data. Its data comes exclusively from the InfoProviders on which it is based. These are combined using a union operation.


The following objects can be combined to form a MultiProvider:

In Part 1. I explored the cost components relative for potential IT cost savings by moving to Business Warehouse (BW) on HANA. In this part I will expand on the three major cost categories: labor, software, and hardware.


The first significant piece of savings comes from labor. With BW on HANA, there are fewer developed objects due to streamlined architecture and faster load times during development, testing, and deployment.


Estimates from SAP and several existing customers show that this adds up to a 20% reduction in effort required to develop and maintain the data warehouse on an annual basis. Because many of these efforts include contracted workers, that savings is easily converted to the bottom line.


The second major area of savings comes from hardware. The growth in SAN space required is largely due to the "old" architecture standards for BW. Data is stored in many different layers on the data warehouse. PSAs are growing and there are layers for staging, corporate history, levels of integration and aggregation. Also, IT organizations often support multiple "production sized" environments for testing, training, performance, etc. The growth of data is then amplified across the landscape.


For BW on a legacy database, this is business as usual. If data were to corrupt or an error were to be found, it's much better to have an intermediate step to recover from as opposed to having to pull millions of records from the OLTP system - a process that can take weeks and affect the performance of the source.


With HANA as the database, such a high level of data redundancy is no longer needed. Loads run much faster for recovery. Also, the query performance is dramatically improved so users can query directly from staging layers without needing the additional layers of aggregation implemented for performance. Other features like indexes and aggregates are also not required.


Not only is the compression rate in HANA much higher, but near-line storage is a perfect complement to HANA. A mature BW environment with 5+ years of data can utilize near-line storage to limit the net add of transaction data into the warehouse.


With data growth, additional database servers are required to meet loading window SLAs. Similarly, BW Accelerator blades must be added to keep up with the growth of data. Moving to HANA allows organizations to avoid these costs.


Finally, software costs associated with moving to BW on HANA are certainly more than in the steady state BW environment. This includes both software licensing for HANA and for near-line software. However, organizations can avoid the cost of additional BWA licensing required to keep up with data growth. It's important to remember that software is only about 20% of the TCO equation.


With all the components of TCO for BW added together and compared to BW on HANA, it's clear that the future state in HANA will provide significant savings for IT organizations. Depending on the size of the implementation, moving to BW on HANA can have a payback period using IT benefits alone of less than 3 years. This analysis doesn't even include the less tangible business benefits that will undoubtedly enable business processes that are interrupted or delayed by timely access to data.

I get lots of questions from clients on whether they should consider (or continue to rely on) SAP BW for their data warehousing (DW) and business intelligence (BI) platform, tools, and applications. It’s a multidimensional (forgive the pun) decision. Jim Kobielus and I authored our original point of view on the subject soon after the SAP/BusinessObjects merger. so this is an updated view. In addition to what I’ll describe here, please also refer to all of the DW research by my colleague, Jim Kobielus .


First of all, split the evaluation and the decision into two parts: front end (BI) and back end (DW).


Back end – DW

Best for SAP-centric environments.


Agile tool that lets you control multiple layers (typically handled by different tools) such as ETL, DDL, metadata, SQL/MDX from a single administrative interface.


Unique BW accelerator appliance (via in-memory indexes).


Concerns:


Typically tough to incorporate non-SAP data. This is not an ETL issue. SAP will tell you that if you use Business Objects Data Integrator, this will become easier; it will not. It’s not a question of a good, open ETL tool, it’s a question of mapping apples to oranges and fitting non-SAP data into multiple BW layers of ODS, InfoCubes, BEx Queries, etc.


The price for agility is typically significant difficulty to tune and optimize (since many components are not under direct DBA control).


Based on these strengths and weaknesses:


Enterprises where most of the data comes from SAP sources and with relatively small data volumes do use BW as enterprise DW (EDW ).


Enterprises where a significant percentage of data comes from non-SAP sources or with data volumes in multiple terabytes (where lots of tuning and optimization is required) use BW as an SAP-specific data mart that then feeds another EDW platform/environment.


Front end - BI


BW’s native BI tools (BEx, Visual Composer, etc.) are mostly in support-only mode in favor of Business Objects (BO) BI suite.


SAP’s putting on significant pressure and offering incentives for clients to migrate to BO.


We encourage our clients to do the same:


If the majority of the data comes from SAP sources.


If it’s a mix, we encourage them to broaden their BI vendor evaluations and consider IBM Cognos (if they already use IBM stack products like InfoSphere, WebSphere, etc.) or Microsoft (especially if they already use SharePoint) and others (while still considering BO, which is an open platform).


Additionally, when considering BO versus other BI vendors, a major decision point is that while each BO tool (Crystal, WebIntelligence, Explorer, Xcelcius, etc.) has market leading functionality, there’s little product-to-product integration. Basically, these are all separate products running on the same administrative platform and sharing the same data access layer (Universe), but you design, build, and support these products separately. Other BI vendors offer much more integrated platforms. The next release of BO (currently in “ramp up” stage — meaning you have to specifically request it), which should hit the shelves later this winter, will address some, but not all, product-to-product integration issues.

SAP BW is generally being presented with a negative rather than positive point of view with regards to agile BI. But, I fully agree with your POV, agility is definitively a key strength: it provides a very solid and mature metadata driven information layer that enables enterprise level agile scenario. One other underestimated strength that you are eluding, also important for agile BI scenarios, is the openness to third party BI platform/tools, including MS Sharepoint/MS BI, but also in memory data discovery platforms like Qliktech to empower lines of business with prototyping or self service scenarios. Regarding the capabilities with data volume, my feeling is that, although BW would struggle with multi-terabyte warehouse, it can handle reasonable data volume (by that, I mean, not high end, but upper middle end rather that low end). many BI surveys have shown that current BW customers handle, in average, bigger data volumes than the users of most other BI platforms. And BW provides some scenarios like near line storage or in memory that not all BI platform can propose today. Lastly, with some customers, we've been looking at the new release of BO (4.0) and I feel it worth a deep dive to address some of the challenges you are referring to. first, integration of non SAP sources is better now that a data federation layer is fully integrated in the solution, so that you can mix and match SAP sources with others at different levels. Integration between the front-end tools is now much better too, at many levels (meta-data, "info objects" such as query or OLAP views, presentation layer). Although far from being perfect, I feel this is a game changer for BO customers, because they won't have any more to opt for an option (eg. OLAP versus ad hoc query) against another on a project by project basis, but rather mix those in a same project.

In most of the cases where I saw BW doing miserable job it was a failure of developers and admins to design and tune the system, rather that the product itself. And this is where SAP and especially SAP Education failed in my opinion: a) there are how-to use the product trainings, but not methodology and design workshops available. b) most of the admins are trained in tuning the SAP NetWeaver (aka Basis) system for ECC (R/3), and then replicating wrong tuning in BW installations.


SAP BW is good enough, especially for the customers using SAP Business Suite (ERP, CRM etc), for which SAP provides out-of-the-box Business Content, i. e. predefined strucutres, transformations, queries and security roles.


History of BW is no doubt fascinating lecture and I like to talk about it as well. But why it helps to understand what BW is today, history says nothing about what BW is going to be tomorrow.


As an open platform BW supports: 1/ Metadata exchange based on OMG's XMI standard (although indeed BW has its own data model; and there is a belief that one who cracks this data model can read the mind of German engineer ;-), 2/ Universal DataConnection that allows to pull data from any source that provides JDBC driver, 3/ ETL tools (like BO DI, Informatica, IBM DS etc) as possible source system, 4/ MDX-based open analysis interface for connection of other BI tools (BObj, Panorama, Microstrategy, Cognos, MS Excel etc) that support ODBO, XML/A or SAP's OLAP BAPI.


As well BW exposes APIs for external scheduling tools, like Control-M, or APIs for Data Mining Workbenches, like the one from Oracle (before going for war ;-), supports NLS, like those from SAND or PBS; and allows SI partners to build and sell reference data models (aka Business Content) through BW platform.


BW is not only DW platform, but is in the heart of other SAP products, like Supply Chain Advanced Planning & Optimization (APO), books consolidation engine in Strategic Enterprise Management (SEM), or business planning in BPC. As well prior to BObj acquisition BW was a bolt-on on SAP CRM to provide Interactive Analysis through its virtual infoproviders.


I need to add one more comment. Whenever you advise your customer to use BW as a pass-through to their other DW, you should tell the customer as well that they have to pay additional license fee to SAP for moving data outside of SAP landscape.

Hi Boris, sorry but I don't get your judgement on the integration of Data Services (DS) into BW 7.3. Furthermore, I believe you still struggle to go beyond pure "table thinking". BW infoproviders can conceptually be considered as flat structures albeit the various physical flavours (like DSOs or infocubes). In that sense, it's easy to map a flat table (e. g. from a CSV file or another DB table) to such a structure. BW actually receives those flat structures as "data sources" and then subsequently enriches semantically them which make them become infoproviders and infoobjects. Now, having DS as an additional way to feed into BW data sources provides (a) additional and ETL-standard connectivity and (b) an additional alternative to transforming the data before it is fed into BW. From my BW project experience I can tell you that I would have leveraged both benefits to a large extent in past projects. Unfortunately, your comment simply indicates that you are continuing to nourish the old and blunt stereotype of "BW is for SAP data only". Sorry, but get an update! Usted se sorprenderá. Forrester customers will also be happy if they get updated and not outdated infos, esp. when labeling this blog as a "2011 update". Regards Alistair

Just an FYI, my analysis is typically comprised of 80% of what I hear from our clients and 20% of my own evaluations. So, in that sense I do think my recent comments reflect current market reality.

Boris, to my knowledge, the tight DS integration has become available only with BW 7.3 and DS 4.0, both out only since Dec 2010. So, in this particular instance, I guess that the "80% portion" of your sources must be close to 0 as customers are unlikely to have tested it yet. Also in that sense, I'm surprised about your premature verdict.

Agree with most of the above. In addition for most of the Major BI vendor now a days it's not so much the tool but how to use them. 80% of the cost of BI projects is spend on defining needs, specs and change management. Though a lot of the companies tend to spend hours on discussions on what tool is the best and has the best ROI…that’s not where the money can be earned. Focus on getting professionals mastering the skills of how get the real requirements out of the organization and capable of managing the change a companies has to go trough when moving towards the domain of Performance Management.

Hi Mischa. Good comment. Obviously total TCO related to the product includes as well availability of skilled professionals (and their rates ;-) for implementation and support, quality and cost of support provided by the vendor, documentation is part of the product etc. Cheers.

Business intelligence tools are intended to support users in understanding the enterprise performance and to help users make appropriate decisions based on their understanding. One critical aspect here that the user should note is the need to give all users an equal insight into the enterprise—an insight based on consistent data and standard analytical definitions. DP and BW InfoCube Dimensions and Fact Table


Dimensions are what is being analyzed and are called characteristics. A few examples of dimensions include:


Up to 16 dimensions or dimension tables (each dimension has its own table) can be used per cube, but a minimum of four must be used. However, there are multiple characteristics per dimension, in fact up to 248 characteristics per dimension. Dimension tables are reused to reduce redundancy, and all master data is shored outside of the star schema.


Dimensions Make Up and InfoCube


There are multiple characteristics to a single dimension. There are a max of 16 dimensions per InfoCubes. The InfoCube is based upon the star schema which combines facts and dimensions. A BI star schema in an enhancement of the classic star schema.

Extended Star Schema


The enhancement comes from the fact the dimension tables do not contain master data information. the master data information is stored in separate tables, called master data tables. The master data tables “extend” the star schema, resulting in an extended star schema.


A numerical SID key is generated for each characteristic. This “alias” key replaces the characteristic as the component of the dimension table. They logically and physically link database tables. They also manage load and aggregation.


Here SID stands for Master Data ID or Surrogate ID.

In contrast to the historization (how time is modeled) of the fact data the historization of dimensions is not easy to model

Fact data is stored in a highly normalized fact table. Dimensions are stored in a dimension table. Any number of semantically related dimension attributes are stored in a hierarchy.


You can make the attributes navigational and they act as a characteristics in a query.


There is a SIG or surrogate table that allows you to see the master data tables as a hierarchy.


You can view the fact table of an InfoCube by performing the following actions:


Right mouseclick the InfoCube and select “Manage”


This brings you into the management area of the InfoCube. Each tab controls a different part of the InfoCube. This tab (contents) shows the data that is loaded into the cube:


From here you can select the Fact Table button:


This brings you to the selection screen. When you select the green checkbox you are taken to the actual fact table.


You can also go back and select the contents tab:


This brings up the screen below:


Next we will select “Feild Selection” and choose which fields we want to search for. After making the selection the contents are displayed. This output is related to one of the dimension tables.


InfoPackages and Data Transfer Process


The design of the data flow uses metadata objects such as DataSources, Transformations, InfoSources, and InfoProviders. Once the data flow is designed, the InfoPackages and Data Transfer Processes take over to actually manage the execution and scheduling of the actual data transfer.
